Our Rector has allocated 45 positions, 22 of which are professors, in 2.5 years. Therefore, our fellow students are very lucky in this regard. Afyon Kocatepe University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine has another importance; We are in the heart of Anatolia. I asked our teacher İbrahim from the biostatistics department. They conducted a study by taking a sample of 1,400 students from 7 different veterinary faculties in 7 regions, and we saw that our friends from rural areas are more successful in this profession. Again, ladies are more successful than gentlemen. Afyon Kocatepe University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine draws its strength from here. We are located in the heart of Anatolia, close to everywhere, in a strategically important city. By choosing this city, this university, this faculty, you have made the right decision.”
“Leave your faculty as an enlightened, free-thinking and conscientious scientist”
Afyonkarahisar Chamber of Veterinarians Chairman Muhammed Nevzat Algan stated in his speech that veterinary education is very difficult and requires disciplined work.
“Don’t worry about the anatomy lesson, which most of us have completed, especially in the 1st grade, and the many lessons whose difficulty level is almost competing with each other. The best years of your life are your student years at the faculty; be aware of this. As the representative of our sacred profession, veterinarians of the future, what we want more importantly from you, our esteemed students, is that you leave your faculty as intellectuals and scientists of free conscience. You don’t have the luxury of staying put on this issue. This is the only basis for repaying your family’s debt of gratitude to your country. I would like to ask you to communicate with your other friends in the faculty with the motto of siblings from the same mother and father, and to always have your jacket buttoned in front of your valuable teachers who are raising you. I ask you to act as a professional to your seniors, and even to your friends who are in the upper classes.”
“AKU is an educational institution with more than 160 thousand graduates”
Afyon Kocatepe University Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet Karakaş, on the other hand, said that Afyon Kocatepe University, which is one of the important values of Afyonkarahisar, has graduated over 160 thousand students from various branches since its establishment. Rector Karakaş, who stated that the students who study at AKU, which has a strong, well-equipped staff and physical facilities, are lucky, said, “Our university has updated its strategic plan as of 2019, with the departure of 2 universities from our structure, and changed its priority areas while determining the main axis of its strategic plan. Our university, which had previously implemented a health-oriented priority area policy, made different evaluations on the areas it focused on, especially after the separation of Afyonkarahisar Health Sciences University, and highlighted important areas by taking into account the potentials of our region, province and university.
“Our Veterinary Faculty is in the first place”
Noting that as AKU management, they have determined the fields of veterinary medicine, engineering and tourism as priority areas, Karakaş said, “These areas are related to the opportunities and potentials of our Afyonkarahisar, the most important of our region, and our university. Our Veterinary Faculty is one of the areas we prioritize in this sense. In this context, we have started to prioritize investing in our Veterinary Faculty while implementing our policies, depending on both the academic structure and the physical infrastructure and other equipment and opportunities. Our faculty has begun to experience and use the blessings of this priority, especially within 2.5 years. Especially in these 2.5 years, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine has started to rise with the investments we have made, and it has started to take place among the veterinary faculties of our country in many respects among the veterinary faculties. In this sense, I congratulate our veterinary faculty management and our esteemed colleagues.”

“We have made many investments in our faculty during this period and we will continue to invest in our veterinary faculty by taking all necessary steps to ensure that our students receive their education in the best conditions. Our faculty has become a faculty that provides strong service with its physical infrastructure, equipment and faculty members. It is a great chance for you that the Animal Hospital, which is under construction, will be put into service in 2022. Because you will graduate from this faculty by completing your education in our new Animal Hospital, which will be designed according to the needs of the era, and as well-equipped veterinarians.”
“We attach importance to accreditation”
Underlining that as AKU, they attach importance to accreditation, Karakaş said, “We are rapidly continuing accreditation activities at our university for a qualified education. While renewing our strategic plan, we also updated our targets. One of our goals, perhaps the most important; our departments and faculties were accredited. In this sense, the Association for Evaluation and Accreditation of Veterinary Education Institutions and Programs in our Faculty of Veterinary Medicine; Accreditation processes continue with the Association for Evaluation and Accreditation of Science, Literature, Science-Literature, Language and History-Geography Faculties (FEDEK) and the European Association of Veterinary Education Institutions. I believe that these works will be completed in a short time.”
Expressing that they attach importance to internationalization as a management, Karakaş said, “As AKÜ, we also attach importance to internationalization. Within the scope of Erasmus+, 143 European universities; Afyon Kocatepe University, which has agreements with a total of 217 universities, 74 of which are from non-European countries, has the title of the university that is entitled to receive the highest grant in Turkey in 2021 Erasmus+ Internship Consortium applications. Similarly, in our Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, our country is at the top of the list with 40 international agreements it has among the Faculties of Veterinary Medicine.
“Computed tomography is coming to Animal Hospital”
Expressing that Kocatepe Animal Hospital will be completed and put into service by the end of 2022, Karakaş shared the following information about investments:
“The cost of our Animal Hospital is 33 million Turkish Liras. Hopefully, this construction will be completed by the end of 2022. It is a very important investment made in our university. It is also worth emphasizing this. In addition, we have given serious support to our faculty. We allocated a total of 45 staff. Again, our Faculty of Veterinary Medicine takes its place among the faculties that receive the highest share among the staff allocations that we are currently working on. Likewise, we continue to discriminate in a way that takes into account the needs of our new Animal Hospital, where we will make contracted personnel or other purchases. We will also make purchases at the technician level among our posted staff. When our Animal Hospital is completed, we will make it stronger in terms of internal equipment, equipment and human resources, and it will become a fully equipped animal hospital for the province, the region and Turkey. We will fill an important shortcoming with this hospital. But most importantly, it will be a great opportunity for you, our students, to receive a full-fledged education, to make your applications fully-fledged. We continue to invest in our Veterinary Practice and Research Farm. This year, our Veterinary Practice and Research Farm also received the title of research from the Ministry of Agriculture. We take care of their needs as a priority. In this sense, I would like to thank Mr. Mayor for his contribution to the new warehouses built in our farm. We continue to bring new opportunities to our farm as well as new supports. We made an agreement with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the process continues. We will bring 400 sheep to our farm. Next year, we will bring computerized tomography, which is one of the most important requirements of the medical profession in education, to our hospital.”
“University life has 3 important pillars”
Addressing the students in the last part of his speech, Rector Karakaş stated that students should work devotedly and regularly throughout their education life and said:
“Dear students, today we will put on your white coat, which is an important symbol of medicine. After you put on your aprons, you will have stepped into the veterinary profession. With this awareness, your self-sacrificing and regular work throughout your education life is very important in terms of preparing you for life. In this context, it is useful to make a few recommendations. Do not leave any missing processes during your education life. Follow your lessons. Do not see university life as just lessons. University life has 3 important pillars: One of them is learning life, which is at the center. This will happen with the lectures and your work in connection with the lectures. But there is also a cultural and social life dimension. When they are all together, you have the identity of a university student. So you have to complete these three together. If a Mehmet Akif and a Ziya Gökalp came out of the veterinary faculty, this tripod was completed. This is not just a necessity for a famous person, friends. This is also to be a strong individual; It is also important in order to be resilient in the face of life’s difficulties and to experience a positive socialization process in this youth process, which is the most important part of the socialization process. Be sure to complete these 3 legs. In addition, carry out studies related to your field to improve yourself. In addition, after graduation, after preparing yourself for life, do what you will do with passion. It may not always be a job you want or desire. Or you may not be doing a job, but if you do it with love, you will definitely be successful in that job, and if you do your job in the best way, your way will definitely be opened. It will take you towards your goal. Never make your motivation negative in this sense, always motivate yourself in a positive way. In addition, be loyal to our nation, its interests and values. Also, never deviate from professional ethics. You know, Turkovac, your veterinarian colleague who invented the Covid-19 vaccine. Be a hard worker like him. Work selflessly for your state and nation.”
After the first year students of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine put on their white coats, the ceremony ended with a group photo shoot.
